Ex-Lawyer Stephen Conrad Gets 11 Years

November 24th, 2008 Author: Ben Glass

Ex-Virginia personal injury attorney Stephen Conrad was sentenced by a federal court judge to serve 11 year in prison for stealing over $4,000,000 in settlement funds from clients. Through his attorney, Conrad apparently asked for leniency, citing financial hardship and gambling and drug addictions.

What’s so amazing about this is the size of the theft. How did this guy continue to get so many clients and to steal from so many before he was caught. Weren’t these folks paying attention to their cases? Who was referring cases to him. He wasn’t well known as an accomplished personal injury attorney. How was the public so hoodwinked?

Woman Struck by a Metrobus

November 7th, 2008 Author: Ben Glass

Metro has agreed to a settlement worth $2.3 million in a suit filed by a man whose wife died of the personal injuries she sustained after being struck by a Metrobus in 2007. Gregory Schoenborn said he filed the suit in order to hold the agency accountable for the February 14, 2007 accident that took the life of his wife, 59-year-old Martha Stringer Schoenborn, and her friend and Federal Trade Commission co-worker, 54-year-old Sally Dean McGhee. The women were in a downtown Washington D.C. crosswalk when the bus hit them. In September, the bus driver, Victor Kolako, entered a plea of guilty in U.S. District Court to two felony counts of negligent homicide. He received a sentence of a year in prison.

Schoenborn’s suit was filed in U.S. District Court. The family of McGhee has also filed a wrongful death suit, which is set to go to trial on October 17.

On the day of the accident, Schoenborn and McGhee, both residents of Alexandria, had just left their workplace and were crossing with the “walk” signal when Kolako hit them after failing to look while making a left turn.

In 2007, five people died in Metrobus accidents.
